#4. Katy Mills
Right off of I-10 West with close proximity to 99 Grand Parkway, the Katy Mills mall is home to over 175 stores featuring a high-fashion line-up including H&M, Kate Spade New York, Fossil, Michael Kors, Coach Outlet, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, The Cosmetic Company Store, Cole Haan Outlet, Tommy Bahama and Steve Madden. The mall has a little something for everyone in the family with a movie theater and arcade style games along with a Rain Forest Cafe.
Just across from the Katy Mills mall, Typhoon Texas Water park covers over 25 acres. What an exciting way to cool off with some fun in the Texas sun with 33 slides and lazy river. You can spend a full day of fun in the water along with delicious food and popular entertainment throughout the summer.
Katy was originally a wide-open prairie with a rich ecological and cultural history. What is known today as Katy was the hunting grounds of the Karanawa Indian tribes, the winter feeding grounds of great herds of buffalo and large flocks of wild ducks, geese, sand hill and whooping cranes, and numerous other game birds, and home to longhorn cattle, deer and wolves. Earliest settlement of the community in 1872 was known as Cane Island, for Cane Island Creek that runs through it.
The town site of Katy was laid out and platted by J.O. Thomas, L.C. Luckel and R.M. Cash in 1895, supposedly named for the M-K-T Railroad. A post office was opened in 1896, and even after the hurricane of 1900 that destroyed Galveston and also destroyed most of the buildings of Katy, it rebuilt and continued to grow. The main industry was rice farming, but also peanuts and cotton. Katy Independent School District was formed in 1918, and a gas field was discovered in 1934. Many wells were dug, and this industry is still an important part of the city today.
The City of Katy was formally incorporated in 1945. Katy has always been a family style community, and it continues to offer residents the charm of a small town. Ancestral Homes of Katy were researched and historical markers erected by the local Texas Sesquicentennial Committee in 1986. The historical markers can be used as a guide for a walking or driving tour of more than a dozen historical homes and buildings in downtown Katy.²
In April, Katy hosts the Wild West Brewfest featuring over 500 different brews under a giant tent in the Katy Mills Parking lot. Proceeds go towards various katy charities. On Thursday nights, enjoy no cover charge, $5 beer, and live music. For more information about getting tickets for the fest visit Wild West Brewfest.
For wholesome family fun, Katy has many exciting venues like the Home Run Dugout. For baseball fans, this is an experience like no other. You can experience 46,000 square feet of fun with 12 indoor state-of-the-art batting bays that use soft-toss pitching technology to safely toss pitches over the strike zone. Imagine yourself up to bat at any of the MLB stadiums, including Minute Maid Park, with their augmented reality experience along with the ability digitally track your hitting stats.
The Home Run menu features ballpark favorites at an elevated level including hot dogs, burgers, tacos, wings, sliders, flatbreads and more. In addition to the batting bays, guests can also enjoy a first come, first served outdoor area for league play, or a pick-up game of Wiffle ball or kickball. Filled with flat screen TVs featuring baseball games for the whole family to enjoy, you can kick back in one of the three outdoor bars, sit around the fire pits, or relax on the wrap around porch to enjoy live music on the concert stage with comfortable seating for up to 500 people.
